Blinded by the Light by Gurinder Chadha, is about the only son of a Pakistani, named Javed Khan, who lives in a small discriminating town in Luton, England in 1987. Struggling to find his true identity, racial discrimination, and lack of support from his father, Javed’s life immediately took a turn when he first heard the music by the American rockstar, Bruce Springsteen.
Javed grew up in a very strict and culture driven household. Only his father had the rights to talk and have an opinion in the family, since Javed is the only son, his father expected him to have a great well-paying job, and help the family. However, Javed was going through an identity crisis, and simply did not want to be what his father wanted him to be, but he did not have the voice to tell his father.
Feeling hopeless and isolated, he was even put more into pressure when he saw the violence and the hatred that some white people had towards people of color, more specifically “Pakis” or Pakistani descent. When he realized how poorly they were being treated, he instantly had the urge to stand up for his people, and help them to not be scared for their rights as human beings. Unfortunately, though he had good intentions, he simply did not have the courage to do so, and tell his parents, because he was raised to keep his mouth shut and his opinions to himself, thus he would always write his thoughts on his diaries. However, he wanted to be free from his culture, and follow what everyone else was doing, but he did not have the guts to do so until one of his Pakistani friends from school showed him Bruce Springsteen’s music.
At first Javed was doubtful because he thought that music would not understand him. One song later, and his life was never the same. He fell deeply connected to his music, and started living his life using Bruce’s lyrics and ideology. He became obsessed and started to follow his dreams on becoming a writer. Unfortunately, his father did not support him at first. He would be ashamed of his work, even though people recognized how great of a writer Javed is. His father simply believed that writing would not be enough for a living, but Javed thought otherwise. After Javed left to follow his dreams to become a writer, his father realized his mistake after reading one of Javed’s writings. He realized that Javed only wanted to follow his dreams in order to help his family, and not ruin their relationship. Shortly after, His dad became his biggest supporter and even started listening to Bruce as well. He then attended Manchester University to pursue his dream to become a writer.
In conclusion, this film showed the power of music and how it can turn someone’s life around. In this case, Javed was able to find a part of his missing identity, and resist racial discriminations that he faced in his neighborhood. It showed how music can guide someone pass through tough times, and be able to have the power to push through and reach for your dreams no matter what.
The film “A Star is Born” directed by the famous actor and director Bradley Cooper is about a tragic love story between two artists who lived two completely different lives. One being a very successful country singer who struggles to fight his inner demons while the other is a timid waitress who is also an aspiring artist. In this movie, you will see the awful effects of alcohol and drug addiction and how it can not only ruin one’s career but life as well.
It all started when Bardley Cooper’s Jackson Maine met Lady Gaga’s Ally in a drag queen bar in New York. Maine was drinking on the bar after a successful concert when all of a sudden, Ally caught he’s attention with her performance. After that night, the two fell for one another and developed a relationship. When Maine realized her song writing skills, he decided to help her create a hit song, which propelled her career after Maine took her to one of his concert. Since then the two started to perform together. However, after a handful of times performing together and living together, Ally realized that Maine had an alcohol addiction problem which she later on realized that it is not good for not only for Maine himself, but also their relationship.
After a record producer witnessed and praised her for her performance, she was immediately offered the chance to have the spotlight to herself and producer her own record as a singer. Filled with excitement and joy, she took the offer with no hesitation. Although Maine was proud of her accomplishment, it was obvious that it took a huge toll not only in Maine’s life but also his career. It can be seen when he started to take in not only more alcohol but also drugs during Ally’s important celebrations and performances. Although Ally stood beside Maine’s side through everything he has done. There were people who thought he was ruining her emerging career and image by his actions. As a result of his realization of his actions and his lover for Ally, he decided to take away his life.
Finally, in this movie we see that no matter how successful someone can be, if they are facing addiction, we can see how it can ruin someone’s life and using suicide as a last resort in hopes to solve everything. We can see how committing suicide does not fix anything but wastes your life, and makes everyone around you miserable.
During World War II, there is no doubt that many lives have been lost in both the American and the German side. One of the key factors that would determine victory for either side was air superiority. In the movie directed by Anthony Hemingway called “Red Tails”, the film displays how the roles of African American fighter pilots in the U.S Military significantly changed not just in their jobs, but also on how they are being treated by other white U.S military personnel.
In the beginning of the movie, we are shown how many American bomber planes are being shot down by German fighter planes, simply because the American fighter pilots can not execute proper military protocol. The white American fighter pilots decides to fly away from the bombers to take down the other german pilots leaving them unprotected and vulnerable from being shot by other German fighter planes.
Meanwhile, the African American fighter pilots have been doing land missions, taking down mobile cars, and trains using old fighter planes. Unsatisfied doing usual and dull missions, many African American fighters and military officials asked if they could be part of a more crucial and thrilling mission.
At first, the white generals in charge, did not stand with the idea of having African American fighter pilots because they believed they are not educated enough, and that they are not capable of protecting the bombers because they believed that they could not follow military protocols. However, after many more lives lost, the general decided to give the African American fighter pilots a chance to fly with the bombers.
After a successful mission protecting the bombers, and keeping any plane from being shot by German fighter planes. As a result, many of the whites who were on the bombers acknowledged the “Red Tails” or the African American fighter pilots for taking them back home safely and protecting them from the German fighters. Not only did the white pilots treated them differently but also received new fighter planes that they could use to combat German fighters.
Overall, behind all the action scenes that the movie provided. It taught a crucial history of World War II. It showed some of the struggles that African American fighter pilots had and how they were being treated differently by their co-leagues, but in the end, they showed courage and the capability to follow military protocols earning not only their badges but also the respect that they deserved for fighting for their country.
When we think of villains in super hero movies, the Joker, Gotham’s Prince of Crime, is without a doubt one of the most iconic character that will come up to our mind. In this movie, we will see the origin story of Arthur Fleck also known as the Joker. A depressed and failed comedian in Gotham City, who has been tyrannized and overlooked by society, turned mad when he found out and remembered the truth behind his mother’s untold secrets.
In the beginning of the movie, we will see Arthur Fleck, living a normal day in his life, flipping an advertisement sign outside of his work, when all of a sudden, a group of hooligans stole the board from him. Unsatisfied with the troubles that the hooligans made, they decided to smash the board into Arthur’s head and beat him down to the ground.
Bleeding, and all bruised up, Arthur’s manager talked to him regarding the incident. However, without being able to explain what happened, the manager did not want to hear what Arthur had to say, and threatened to fire him from his job. Based on what we know so far, we can clearly see how Arthur is being tyrannized and overlooked by society which are some of the triggering factors that started to drive Arthur Fleck into madness.
While Arthur is going through all this madness, he had seen a letter written by his mother that was meant to be for Thomas Wayne, his “supposed” father. However, when Arthur spoked with him, he found out that he was not his real father, and that Arthur’s mother actually adopted him, but not only that, but he also found out that she let her boyfriend at that time, abuse Arthur as a young boy.
Filled with emotion and rage, Arthur decided to go to the hospital to visit his mom who was brought there the night before due to a heart attack. He later on killed her on the same hospital bed, and that is when he completely lost control of himself. He started going on a rampage killing a former co-worker and even the TV show host, Murray in front of live audience.
As a result, Arthur’s actions started to trigger violence in Gotham City, causing not only damages in businesses but also killings of many people including famous Gotham politician, Thomas Wayne and his wife.
Finally, we all know that people can only go through so much pain and pressure before they lose themselves. We can see in Arthur’s case, that the incidents that happened to him, only made it worse for his condition to act sane. As a result, he ended up driving himself into madness and found his purpose by committing violent crimes.
This film is based on the 1979 musical, Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street by Stephen Sondheim. The main character, Sweeney Todd (Benjamin Barker) is played by Johnny Depp and Mrs. Lovett is played by Helena Bonham Carter. This musical centers around Sweeney Todd’s thirst for revenge. He has come back to his hometown to get his revenge for his wife and daughter, along the way he meets Mrs. Lovett. Mrs. Lovett realizes who Sweeney Todd really is and decides to take part in his route for revenge. She becomes an accomplice because she has fallen in love with him.
This story is very dark and based on death and revenge. The lyrics of the songs show yearning, anger, and sorrow. It isn’t for the faint of heart. There is blood in almost every scene, and there are plenty of murders throughout the film. Sweeney Todd believes that his family is dead and knows exactly who is at fault for sending him away. The villain of the story is Judge Turpin. Judge Turpin was jealous of Sweeney Todd’s wife. He tried to take her away many times but she had refused. So, he did what he knew would guarantee him her hand. He exiled Sweeney Todd and forced her to be with him. He finally got the woman he wanted and as well as her child. When Sweeney came back home, Mrs. Lovett told him that his wife and child are dead. Sweeney’s main goal is to kill Judge Turpin and get revenge for his family and himself. Sweeney, used to be a celebrity barber when he was known as Benjamin Barker. So, he opened a barbershop and used his skills to gain fame once again so one day Judge Turpin would arrive on his doorstep. He planned on killing him as soon as he sat on the leather chair. In the meantime, Sweeney began killing some of the people who he believed were bad and practiced getting rid of the body with the help of Mrs. Lovett. On the day that he finally had Judge Turpin in his hands, he was ready to slit his throat when they are interrupted. Sweeney then plans another plot to get him in his grasp.
As the story goes on, Sweeney finds out that Judge Turpin’s daughter is really his own and that she is alive and well. He learns that the judge has been keeping her locked inside all this time so no one would know her real identity. He also realizes that the crazy homeless lady always outside of Mrs. Lovett’s shop is his wife who has gone insane because she tried to kill herself with poison. Sweeney becomes furious and blames it all on Mrs. Lovett for not telling him the truth.
This story is definitely a dark tale, but it shows how much a person can love and what they are willing to do for those that are loved. The plot unfolds on a very elegant manner and there are no boring parts throughout the film. It also jumps into other people’s viewpoints, so the audience can really understand the whole story. There is no happy ending in this story, but the music is catchy and well written. I highly recommend watching this film, it is a movie that I will never get tired of rewatching.
This movie is not about the Gretel and Hansel that everyone grew up hearing about. It is not a loving fairy tale filled with fun adventures. This film really does bring the original Grimm’s tale to life. The movie is creepy but it is not scary.
The film starts by introducing the main character Gretel, she is trying to find a job as the help. However, the lord of the house is only interested in her virginity and if she’s submissive. However, Gretel is not one to comply with society’s rules. When confronted with these questions, she stands her ground and leaves the place. She has the energy of an activist, she doesn’t believe in her timeline’s society rules. From that scene it is clear that Gretel is more than a peasant girl, there is something more for her.
As the story goes on, it is expressed that Gretel is like a mother figure to her brother. She feeds him and helps him out, since her mom is crazy and is trying to get rid of her. After the mother throws an axe at Gretel, her and Hansel leave home and try to go to another town where they could survive. On their journey, they come across a small house. Hansel approaches the home to see if there was any spare food for them. They are taken in by the owner of the home where she feeds them and keeps them safe. All that she wants is for the kids to help her out with things around the house. However, the witch is only interested in Gretel because she sees a power inside of her. The witch then reveals to Gretel that she is a witch and sees the same gift inside of Gretel. The witch then helps Gretel learn how to use it but in order to achieve the highest power Gretel must do the unspeakable.
Throughout the film, there is a constant message of being your own person and fighting for what you believe is right. Even though Gretel could have finally found a way out of her misery, she chose to save those she loved and to learn on her own through light instead of darkness.
Overall, the movie is a little slow moving but it is entertaining. There could have been more dialogue and a bit more action. It mostly revolves around the creepy aura of the witch. There were many unanswered questions but it was still a nice change from a happily ever after.

The DC Comics universe has had a rough couple of years. Most of the movies made have been average and have not had the same success as Marvel movies. However, Birds of Prey was different than the past DC Comics movies. In this film, the humor did not seemed forced and it paired really well the Harley Quinn’s overall character. The humor was dark at times but was a representation of everything she has gone through. In Suicide Squad, Harley’s backstory stated how she was a psychiatrist and fell in love with the Joker, therefore, changing her whole life. However, her skills as a doctor were never portrayed in the film, instead, she was presented as a psycho who couldn’t do anything without the Joker. Birds of Prey does a good job of showing off how truly smart Harley is and how she is capable of more than has been presented before. The film shows that even though she is now insane, she has retained everything that she has learned.
Throughout the film, Harley diagnosis the people around her and talks like a psychiatrist. She knows exactly what these people have gone through and what has caused these characters to become who they are. Harley, is capable of becoming the strongest villain of Gotham. She is extremely smart and unpredictable and she can get into people’s heads. She knows how to push people’s buttons. Becoming her own person, is the best thing for her and it shows in the film.
Even though every villain was out to get her since she no longer had any ties to the Joker, she was able to stand her ground. This led to her meeting Cassandra Cain and helping form the Birds of Prey. She created a bond with Cassandra Cain and risked her life to save the young girl. This shows that she is still capable of caring for someone and doing the right thing. Even though Harley didn’t actually join the crime fighting group, she played a big part in its formation.
Overall, the movie had great actors, humor, and showcased very intelligent females who can stand their ground. I believe that this is one of the better DC Comics films created by Warner Bros.. It’s nice to see a story about a different character besides the usual Batman, Superman, and Joker films. This was a different story that people haven’t seen and many haven’t even heard of. I highly recommend watching this film.
Growing up I have always loved watching movies. This blog is about my thoughts of the movies that I watch.
